Zapier PM interview guide

Zapier runs a fully remote, longer-than-average PM loop that takes about 4 to 6 weeks (PM candidates average around 30 days): a recruiter screen, a hiring manager job-fit interview, a take-home case study, an EPD (Engineering/Product/Design) panel presentation of that work, then leadership rounds with a director, a GTM leader, and the CPTO. The thing that defines the loop is the take-home plus panel presentation: you build real product thinking on your own time and then defend it live to a cross-functional group, with AI fluency probed throughout.

The interview process

1. Recruiter screen (30 min). A recruiter walks through your background, motivation, and compensation expectations over video. They screen for role fit and for whether your experience matches the level, and gauge how well you understand Zapier and its remote-first, async culture.
2. Hiring manager / job-fit interview (45 to 60 min). The hiring manager digs into relevant PM experience: decisions you owned, challenges you faced, and how you work with engineering and design. This is where they assess whether you can do the actual job and operate independently with minimal supervision.
3. Take-home case study (asynchronous). A short take-home assignment that tests your problem-solving approach and product judgment, often the most challenging part of the loop. Zapier specifically looks at AI fluency here: how you use AI tools in your daily work and reasoning.
4. EPD panel presentation (live, video). You present and defend your take-home to a cross-functional panel of Engineering, Product, and Design peers. They probe your reasoning, trade-offs, and how you handle pushback, plus culture fit.
5. Case study / cross-functional rounds. Additional case-style conversations and cross-functional interviews with people you would work with, sometimes future direct reports. Focus is on collaboration across product, engineering, and design and on real product trade-offs.
6. Leadership interviews (director, GTM leader, CPTO). A director-level interview, a GTM leader interview that covers people management, and a final round with the Chief Product and Technology Officer. These weigh soft skills, leadership, strategic thinking, and alignment with company direction.
7. References and background check. Zapier uses HiPeople for reference collection plus live reference checks, and Certn for background checks before extending an offer.
8. What they're really testing. Three signals carry the most weight: (1) independent problem-solving shown through the take-home and how you defend it on the panel; (2) cross-functional collaboration and trade-off judgment across product, engineering, and design; and (3) AI fluency, meaning concrete evidence you use AI in how you plan and execute work.
