Amazon PM interview guide

Amazon's PM interview runs 5 stages across roughly 4 to 6 weeks, from recruiter screen to a final on-site loop of 5 interviews. The one thing that defines the loop: every single round is a behavioral audit mapped to Amazon's 16 Leadership Principles, not a product-sense or case-study evaluation.

The interview process

  1. Recruiter screen (30 min). A fit check over Amazon Chime covering your background, motivation, and reasons for the role. The recruiter is not running a behavioral evaluation here; they are confirming basic fit and walking you through the process.
  2. Optional online assessment or HireVue (varies). Some candidates receive a recorded video or written exercise before any human contact. This step is not universal; confirm with your recruiter whether it applies to your loop.
  3. Hiring manager phone screen (45 to 60 min). A deeper behavioral conversation that can include early questions about your technical fluency in the team's product domain. The hiring manager decides here whether to advance you to the full loop.
  4. Written assessment or take-home memo (varies, often due within 48 hrs). Some loops ask for a 1 to 2 page essay responding to a prompt about your most innovative project or a time you simplified the customer experience. Treat this as a structured Leadership Principles response in writing, not a PR-FAQ product brief. Not all loops include this step.
  5. On-site loop: 5 interviews of 55 to 60 min each. Five back-to-back sessions with PMs, engineers, or cross-functional leaders. Each interviewer covers 2 to 3 Leadership Principles using behavioral questions only; there is no coding, no live product-design case, and no system-design whiteboard for the standard PM role. One interviewer is the Bar Raiser, an Amazonian from outside the hiring team with veto power over the offer, whose job is to ensure you raise the bar relative to current employees.
  6. Debrief and offer (typically within 1 week of loop). All interviewers submit written feedback and convene in a debrief led by the Bar Raiser. A recruiter delivers a verbal offer or rejection shortly after; the Bar Raiser can block an offer even if every other interviewer votes to hire.
  7. What they're really testing. Three signals above all else: (1) LP alignment demonstrated through specific, data-backed past stories, not hypotheticals; (2) Customer Obsession, the most weighted principle, shown by how you center the customer in every tradeoff; (3) Ownership and Dive Deep, your willingness to be personally accountable for results and to go below the surface when pushed on follow-up questions.
