Yelp PM interview guide

Yelp runs a roughly 3-stage PM loop over 3 to 5 weeks: a recruiter screen, a hiring manager round (often a live working case), and a virtual onsite panel of 4 to 5 back-to-back interviews. The loop is defined by hands-on product sense and analytics: you are expected to know the Yelp app cold, improve it on the spot, and reason through metrics in a structured case, increasingly as a live whiteboard collaboration rather than a long take-home.

The interview process

1. Recruiter screen (30 min). Phone call on your background, recent launches, and fit. Yelp checks role alignment, motivation for Yelp specifically, and your ability to talk crisply about products you have shipped.
2. Hiring manager / phone screen (45 to 60 min). One or two video rounds with a PM or group product manager going deep on your experience plus a product or analytics prompt. Increasingly run as a live working case: ask clarifying questions, frame the problem, then brainstorm out loud as if it were a real planning meeting.
3. Case study (live or take-home). A product design or product-improvement case, often centered on a Yelp surface (search, reviews, business owner tools). Recent candidates report a shift toward live collaboration over lengthy take-homes, so be ready to whiteboard structure, metrics, and tradeoffs in real time.
4. Virtual onsite panel (4 to 5 rounds, ~30 to 45 min each). Back-to-back interviews with PMs, engineers, designers, and marketing. Covers product design, analytics and metrics, technical concepts (no coding), and behavioral, sometimes by pulling up a live Yelp page and asking you to critique and redesign it.
5. What they're really testing. Three signals carry the most weight: structured product sense applied directly to Yelp's own products (improve a feature, design a new one), analytical and metrics judgment (which numbers matter, how to read a shift in them), and cross-functional collaboration, especially how you handle disagreement with engineering and your team.
