Starburst PM interview guide

Starburst's PM loop runs about 3 to 4 weeks across roughly 5 to 6 conversations: a recruiter screen, two technical rounds, and one or two business rounds with the hiring manager and a senior director, sometimes capped by a final presentation. The defining feature is the "explain it to a layperson" test: because the product (Trino, Galaxy, the data lakehouse) is deeply technical, every round checks whether you can translate hard database and infrastructure concepts into plain business value.

The interview process

1. Recruiter screen (30 min). A remote call covering your background, motivation, and what you know about Starburst and its products. The recruiter checks role fit and whether you understand the data lakehouse and Trino space before passing you on.
2. Technical round 1: explain to a layperson. A technical conversation that specifically tests whether you can take a complicated concept (a query engine, a data lake, cross-cloud access) and explain it clearly to a non-technical audience. This is the product-communication signal Starburst weighs most.
3. Technical round 2: techie to techie. A deeper technical discussion with engineers or a technical lead, going into databases, data warehousing, data lakes, and system tradeoffs. For some candidates this includes a hands-on assessment using Trino, the open-source engine Starburst is built on.
4. Business rounds (hiring manager + senior director). One or two conversations focused on personality, culture fit, and how you operate: roadmap thinking, prioritization, working across global cross-functional teams, and owning metrics and OKRs. Behavioral answers are expected in STAR format.
5. Final presentation (role-dependent). Some candidates report a final round where you present prepared work: research, a point of view on the product or market, and why you reached your conclusions. It tests structured thinking and how you defend a recommendation.
6. What they're really testing. Three signals dominate: (1) can you simplify a deeply technical product into clear business value, (2) genuine depth in databases, data warehousing, and data lakes, and (3) roadmap and prioritization judgment tied to customer needs and measurable outcomes.
