Saildrone PM interview guide

Saildrone runs a roughly 2 to 3 week loop (the company self-reports about 23 days) of around 4 stages: a recruiter screen, a hiring-manager video interview, a multi-hour take-home, then a panel/onsite. The one thing that defines it: a heavy written take-home (a system-design or hardware-design document, 8-plus hours) that gets reviewed by the team the way a real Saildrone project spec would, so the loop rewards clear written reasoning about hardware-plus-software systems and live ocean/flight data, not whiteboard trivia.

The interview process

1. Recruiter screen (about 30 min). Phone call covering your background, recent projects, and fit with the mission. Saildrone is checking baseline relevance to autonomous hardware, defense/ISR, or data-at-scale work before they spend the team's time.
2. Hiring-manager video interview (about 45 min). A slightly technical conversation with the hiring manager about your experience, plus a working component (for technical roles this has included a live coding or problem segment). They probe how you reason through a problem out loud, not just outcomes.
3. Take-home exercise (8-plus hours, design document). A multi-hour written exercise: for technical/program roles a system-design problem (for example, ingest a live stream sampling every flight worldwide every 5 seconds and serve it over an HTTP API the UI polls, with sub-second latency), delivered as a design doc with diagrams and pseudocode that enumerates your data-model and storage-engine tradeoffs. Hardware-leaning roles instead get a design scenario (for example, payload design for a mast-mounted component). They grade written clarity and the reasoning behind each choice, since design docs gate real projects at Saildrone.
4. Panel / onsite (about 3 hours). A series of 1:1 and 1:2 interviews with the team (onsite for local candidates, remote otherwise), often including a whiteboard walk-through of a hypothetical problem and a defense of your take-home. Each interviewer covers a different angle: technical depth, cross-functional collaboration, and mission alignment.
5. What they're really testing. Three signals carry the most weight: (1) written design-doc quality and the explicit reasoning behind data-model, storage, and tradeoff choices; (2) fluency at the hardware-plus-software seam (translating sensor, data-pipeline, and operational needs into clear requirements); and (3) mission and customer grounding, meaning you can turn a watch-floor or maritime-operations workflow into prioritized engineering requirements.
