OpenAI PM interview guide

The OpenAI PM interview spans up to 12 conversations across five stages and takes 6-10 weeks end to end. The one defining trait: every round - including the recruiter screen - tests genuine mission alignment and AI-specific product judgment, not generic PM frameworks.

The interview process

1. Recruiter screen (30 min). A real behavioral interview, not a logistics call. Interviewers press on your hardest product launches, biggest failures, and how you handle team disagreements. Compensation and leveling - including possible down-leveling - come up early, which is unusual compared to peer companies.
2. Hiring manager screen (45-60 min, sometimes split into two calls). Covers your background, products you have shipped, and role-specific strategic thinking. The HM gives a quick rundown of the team and org, then probes decisions and trade-offs you made on real products.
3. Product sense screen (60 min). Prompts are deliberately ambiguous and often a single sentence, with minimal interviewer guidance. Candidates have received questions as open-ended as novel-technology scenarios with almost no scaffolding. You are expected to scope, structure, and defend a full product strategy unprompted.
4. Product execution screen (45-60 min). Metrics-focused rounds testing how you translate ideas into measurable outcomes. Prompts are tightly compressed and often tied to real OpenAI challenges like evaluating an agent launch or diagnosing a drop in a key AI metric.
5. Final loop (4-6 rounds over 1-2 days). Approximately 4-6 one-hour rounds covering product sense, product execution, go-to-market collaboration, engineering alignment, and behavioral depth. Conducted virtually by default, with an option to interview on-site in San Francisco. Feedback is compiled into a candidate packet and decisions typically come within a week.
6. What they're really testing. Three signals dominate: (1) genuine mission alignment with safe and beneficial AI, not performative concern; (2) AI-specific product judgment - separating model-layer from application-layer problems, addressing safety without being prompted, and prioritizing with real numbers; (3) leadership under ambiguity - moving fast without chaos when information is incomplete and multiple teams pull in different directions.
