Novartis runs a structured 3 to 5 stage loop that typically takes about 2 weeks to a month: a 30 minute recruiter screen, then interviews with HR, a leadership team member (more technical/functional), and the line manager (strategic), usually capped by a take-home business case. The one thing that defines the loop is matrix leadership: Novartis hires PMs and brand leads through a co-leadership model, so almost every round probes whether you can influence sales, medical affairs, and senior stakeholders without direct authority.

The interview process

1. Recruiter screen (about 30 min). Phone or video call on your background, motivation, and logistics like location and travel. The recruiter checks role fit and whether your pharma or product experience maps to the team before passing you on.
2. HR / talent interview. Behavioral and culture-fit round structured around STAR style answers. Novartis weighs collaboration, integrity, and how you work inside a matrixed org more than raw functional skill here.
3. Leadership team member (functional / technical). A deeper functional round with a senior team member on the actual product or therapy area work: market analysis, prioritization, and domain knowledge relevant to the role (for computational or data PM roles this gets into HPC, drug discovery, and data management).
4. Line manager (strategic). The hiring manager probes strategic thinking and your vision for the product or brand line you would own, plus how you would set objectives and KPIs and make tradeoffs. Conflict, influence, and stakeholder management come up heavily.
5. Business case / take-home. After the line manager round many candidates get a business case to present: typically a product or campaign launch problem you frame, prioritize, and defend. This is where product sense and structured thinking are scored directly.
6. What they're really testing. Three signals carry the most weight: (1) influence without authority across a matrix of sales, medical affairs, and leadership; (2) structured commercial judgment, framing a launch or tradeoff and tying decisions to business and patient outcomes; (3) domain credibility in the specific therapy area or technical stack the role serves.
