Merck PM interview guide

Merck's PM loop runs about two to three weeks across three to four stages: a recruiter or talent-advisor screen, a hiring-manager interview, and one or more panel rounds (often split into a technical or analytics round and a behavioral round), sometimes with a case study or presentation for senior roles. The defining trait is that Merck hires PMs to sit between scientific research and technology, so it weighs whether you can translate complex scientific or technical problems into product requirements and communicate them to both scientists and engineers.

The interview process

1. Recruiter / talent-advisor screen (about 30 min). A phone or video conversation with a Merck talent advisor covering the role, the team, and your background against the job. They check basic qualifications, motivation, and whether your product experience maps to a pharma or scientific-tools context.
2. Hiring-manager interview. A one-on-one with the hiring manager going deeper on your product experience, how you manage a product lifecycle from strategy to execution, and your fit for the specific team. Expect behavioral questions and discussion of your approach to Agile, Waterfall, or hybrid delivery.
3. Technical / analytics round. For product and product-analyst roles this round probes data-driven decision-making, product requirements, and sometimes SQL or analytics. They want to see how you structure thinking around data and turn analysis into a product decision.
4. Panel interviews (virtual or onsite). A series of interviews or a panel with product peers, stakeholders, and developers/engineers, often one-on-one. Senior roles may add a case study or a presentation of a past project. Merck is checking cross-functional communication, especially explaining technical concepts to non-technical scientists and stakeholders.
5. What they're really testing. Three signals dominate: (1) can you translate complex scientific or technical problems into clear product requirements; (2) data-driven, structured decision-making and prioritization; (3) cross-functional communication across scientists, IT, and business stakeholders. Merck also explicitly forbids AI assistance during live interviews, so answers must be your own.
