Gemini PM interview guide

Google's Gemini PM loop runs about 6 to 8 weeks across roughly six rounds: a recruiter screen, a hiring manager screen, then a virtual final loop of product design, execution and strategy, a Gen AI system design round, and a behavioral round. The one thing that defines it: it is more technical than a standard FAANG PM loop and adds a live "vibe-coding" segment where you prototype your own idea with an AI tool while the interviewer presses on how you prompt, reprompt, and reason about model behavior.

The interview process

1. Recruiter screen (30 min). Background, compensation, and role fit, with an early read on whether you have actually built and shipped AI products. Expect to be asked to walk through a complex technical project and the AI tools you used.
2. Hiring manager screen (45 min). A conversational deep dive into one product you owned end to end, the tradeoffs you made, and your AI-first thinking. The manager probes how you decide what is a good task for an LLM versus not, and how Gemini should differentiate against competitors.
3. Product design + vibe-coding (40 min). Part one is an open product-sense prompt (design an AI assistant for a user group). Part two, usually not disclosed upfront, has you share your screen and prototype that idea live with an AI coding tool while defending why you prompted it that way and what you might be missing.
4. Product execution & strategy. A real Gemini failure scenario (for example, the model is confident but wrong) where you define a north star metric, leading indicators, and guardrails. The focus is root-cause analysis: separating model issues from UX issues, designing an A/B test, and deciding when to roll back the model versus iterate.
5. Technical / Gen AI system design. Whiteboard the end-to-end system for how Gemini answers a user query: input parsing, model selection, retrieval, evaluation, and safety layers. Tests whether you understand how LLM systems actually behave, not just product framing.
6. Leadership & behavioral. Influence without authority in an engineering- and research-driven culture: convincing skeptical technical partners, handling disagreement with engineers or researchers, and managing stakeholders with conflicting priorities. Expect questions about deciding with incomplete data.
7. What they're really testing. Three signals carry the most weight: technical fluency with LLM behavior (prompting, evaluation, debugging, hallucinations); hands-on product judgment under pressure, shown live through vibe-coding rather than described; and AI-first strategic thinking about where Gemini fits against OpenAI and Anthropic.
