Gap PM interview guide

Gap Inc runs a fairly standard corporate PM loop, not a famous FAANG-style gauntlet: a recruiter screen, one or two hiring-manager/functional rounds, and a final behavioral or panel round, usually wrapping in about 1 to 3 weeks. The one thing that defines the loop is retail product judgment under data: nearly every substantive round ties back to a Gap business problem (inventory, revenue, promotions, campaigns) and asks you to pick metrics and recommend a data-backed action.

The interview process

1. Recruiter screen (about 30 min). Phone call covering your product background, why Gap, and what you want next. The recruiter checks role fit and culture fit and confirms basics before passing you on.
2. Hiring manager / functional round (1 to 2 interviews). Behavioral plus functional discussion with the hiring manager or a team lead. They probe past product work, how you handle team challenges, and how clearly you explain product needs to stakeholders.
3. Technical / case assessment. A case or analytical exercise on a real retail problem: inventory optimization, a revenue decline, production allocation, or campaign measurement. You are expected to structure the problem, choose the right metrics, reason about A/B testing, and recommend a concrete action.
4. Onsite / final panel. Multiple rounds with different team members, sometimes including a short product strategy or case presentation. They go deeper on product management experience and cross-functional collaboration across IT, finance, and marketing.
5. What they're really testing. Three signals carry the most weight: (1) retail and e-commerce product judgment, shown by tying decisions to inventory, customer experience, and revenue; (2) analytical rigor, meaning you pick the right metrics and can defend an A/B test or measurement plan; and (3) customer-centric, cross-functional communication, meaning you translate customer pain into prioritized features and align other teams.
