Etsy PM interview guide

Etsy's PM loop is short and judgment-heavy: usually about four stages over roughly two to six weeks, a recruiter screen, a hiring manager Zoom, a substantive take-home case study, and a final hiring manager or leadership conversation. The one thing that defines it is two-sided marketplace thinking: every product or analysis answer needs a clear read on both buyers and sellers, and a single-sided answer is the most common reason candidates get cut.

The interview process

1. Recruiter screen (30 min). A conversational phone or Zoom call on your background and why Etsy specifically. The recruiter checks role fit and motivation; candidates report a friendly tone but inconsistent follow-up on next steps.
2. Hiring manager interview (Zoom, 45 to 60 min). A deeper conversation on product judgment, role fit, and your interest in the position. Expect behavioral questions and a push on why this role stood out versus other opportunities you are weighing.
3. Take-home case study. The most substantive stage: a written product case that tests how you frame a problem, decide what matters, and defend tradeoffs inside a two-sided marketplace. They want product thinking, not just execution, and they watch for whether your solution accounts for both buyers and sellers.
4. Final hiring manager or leadership interview (Zoom). Often a walk-through of the case and past work with the hiring manager or a senior leader. The conversation stays anchored on judgment and motivation, including what excites you about the role and why Etsy over alternatives.
5. What they're really testing. Three signals carry the most weight: two-sided marketplace reasoning (every change has a 'what happens on the other side?' follow-up), a specific and genuine point of view on why Etsy rather than generic product interest, and structured product judgment shown in the case (problem framing, prioritization, and defending tradeoffs with data and A/B testing).
