Duolingo PM interview guide

Duolingo's PM interview runs 5 to 6 stages over roughly 4 to 8 weeks: recruiter screen, take-home product assignment, a Round 1 of two 45-minute interviews, and a final round of three more interviews spanning product case, product design, strategy, execution, analytics, and behavioral. The one defining feature of the loop is that every round tests whether you connect product ideas to measurable user behavior, not just feature output.

The interview process

  1. Recruiter screen (30 min). A standard phone call covering your background, skills, and interest in Duolingo. Duolingo also uses this call to brief you on what to expect at each subsequent stage, often sending a prep document afterward.
  2. Take-home product assignment (1 week to complete). Candidates pick or are assigned a feature to propose for Duolingo, then build a slide deck covering the user problem, the solution, success metrics, and an MVP. This is a major cut round: most candidates are eliminated here, and submissions are evaluated on product judgment backed by numbers, not on cleverness alone.
  3. Round 1: two 45-min interviews. Duolingo PMs interview you on two of the five topic areas (strategy, product sense, analytics, UX design, or team fit) and tell you in advance which two you will face. Each interview is one-on-one, with 45 minutes per session.
  4. Final round: three 45-min interviews. The remaining three topic areas are covered, with team fit guaranteed as one of them. The team-fit interview is typically 30 minutes. Combined, Rounds 1 and 2 cover all five dimensions: product case, product design, product strategy with estimation, execution, and analytics.
  5. Hiring manager debrief (30 min, optional). Some candidates get a closing conversation with the hiring manager to recap the process and ask questions about the role or management style. This is not a scored evaluation round.
  6. What they're really testing. Three signals dominate: (1) whether you can diagnose real user behavior and retention patterns, not just name metrics; (2) whether you have genuine product judgment rooted in Duolingo's specific mechanics (streak psychology, habit loops, freemium tradeoffs); and (3) cultural contribution, meaning high tolerance for ambiguity and independent ownership rather than process dependence.
