Cursor PM interview guide

Cursor's PM interview runs 3 to 4 weeks across 4 to 5 stages: recruiter screen, hiring manager screen, technical and product-craft rounds, a paid onsite project (2 days embedded with the team), and a senior leadership round for staff-level roles. The one defining feature is that Cursor tests whether you are a daily, opinionated user of its own product before anything else.

The interview process

1. Recruiter screen (30 min). A brief call with a talent partner covering fit, motivation, and logistics such as availability, location, and compensation. Interviewers check whether you can name specific Cursor features and connect them to your own work history.
2. Hiring manager screen (45-60 min). A senior PM or Group PM dives into your background, product philosophy, and behavioral examples. The round blends behavioral questions with lightweight product sense, and tests whether you can operate in ambiguity at an AI startup where requirements shift daily.
3. Technical and product-craft round (60 min). Tests deep engagement with Cursor's product quality and developer-experience philosophy, plus competitive positioning against GitHub Copilot, Windsurf, and Claude Code. PMs are not asked to write code but must demonstrate fluency with LLM engineering tradeoffs such as latency versus accuracy and context retrieval for prompts.
4. Paid onsite project (2 days, in-person or remote). Candidates are embedded with the team and work on a real product problem, not a synthetic case. At the end, candidates present decisions and tradeoffs; collaboration and judgment under ambiguity are assessed in real time alongside the team.
5. Senior leadership round (for staff-level roles). A director or VP interview testing strategic vision, long-term thinking, and leadership maturity. Candidates who haven't formed sharp, specific opinions on the AI coding tool market struggle here.
6. What they're really testing. Three signals dominate: (1) Authentic product depth as a daily Cursor user with real opinions on its features and competitors. (2) Comfort with fast pace and ambiguity in a sub-200-person hypergrowth company where every hire ships from week one. (3) Technical fluency with AI and LLM concepts at a level where you can drive ML engineers, not just translate for them.
