Convex PM interview guide

Convex (the backend platform for full-stack and AI apps, convex.dev) runs a roughly 4-week PM loop with about three stages: a 30-minute recruiter intro and product demo, a 1-hour hiring-manager interview (often the CPO/co-founder), and a roughly 4-hour virtual onsite with a GPM, the CPO, Head of Design, an Engineering Manager, and Head of Marketing. The loop is defined by founder-level access and a high bar on product judgment for developer tools: because this is an early, sole-PM seat at a roughly 20-person company, they weigh taste, clarity of thinking, and the ability to push back on founders far more than rubric-style scoring.

The interview process

1. Recruiter intro call and demo (30 min). A relaxed background and role-fit conversation paired with a product demo of Convex. They check genuine interest in developer products and the backend platform, plus baseline fit with the small-team culture.
2. Hiring manager interview (1 hour, often the CPO or co-founder). A deeper conversation on your past product work and goals for the first 6 to 12 months of the role. They probe product discovery, strategy, and how you frame and solve problems, looking for someone who can stand up the PM function from scratch.
3. Virtual onsite panel (about 4 hours: GPM, CPO, Head of Design, Engineering Manager, Head of Marketing). Back-to-back interviews across functions covering product strategy, execution, working with engineering and design, and go-to-market. The cross-functional panel tests teamwork, how directly you collaborate, and whether you can earn trust across the team.
4. Debrief and decision. Convex decides through written feedback and a live leadership-moderated debrief rather than numeric scorecards. They prize clarity of thought, taste, and judgment, including whether you understood the why behind your past work, not just the what.
5. What they're really testing. Three signals carry the most weight: (1) product judgment and taste for technical, developer-facing products, with a bias toward simplicity and clarity; (2) cross-functional collaboration and trust, since the PM sits between engineering, design, and GTM on a tiny team; (3) founder-readiness, meaning you form independent views, push back directly, and can build the PM function from the ground up.
