Compass PM interview guide

Compass (the real estate tech brokerage) runs a 5-stage PM loop over about 4 to 6 weeks: a recruiter screen, two to three phone screens (one of them a technical metrics and A/B testing screen), then a 5 to 7 hour virtual onsite of 45 to 60 minute rounds with product, design, and engineering. The thing that defines the loop: rounds center on real, current Compass problems and real estate domain reasoning rather than abstract puzzles, so they test whether you can think like a PM about agents, buyers, and the brokerage business.

The interview process

1. Recruiter screen (30 min). Phone call on your background, the role, and logistics. Checks baseline fit, PM experience, and whether your story matches the level Compass is hiring for.
2. Teammate / hiring manager phone screen (30 to 45 min). Call with a potential future teammate or the hiring manager. Goes deeper on past product work, cross-functional collaboration, and how you reason about user needs.
3. Metrics and analytics phone screen (45 min). The more technical screen, focused on how you measure product success: choosing metrics and a north star, A/B testing, and data-driven decisions. They want to see you connect metrics to product outcomes, not just recite KPIs.
4. Virtual onsite (5 to 7 hours, rounds of 45 to 60 min). Several back-to-back rounds with product, design, and engineering stakeholders. Mix of behavioral questions, product and strategy cases, and open discussion of real challenges Compass is facing right now.
5. Product strategy and case discussion (within the onsite). You work through product sense, execution, and real-estate-specific strategy: how you would prioritize, position Compass against competitors, and approach a current product problem. Evaluators look for structured thinking and clear frameworks over a flashy single answer.
6. What they're really testing. Three signals carry the most weight: structured product judgment under ambiguity (a clear framework beats a heroic guess), data fluency (metric selection, A/B testing, using data to decide), and real estate domain sense plus cross-functional influence (understanding agents, buyers, and the brokerage, and aligning design and engineering without formal authority).
