ClickHouse PM interview guide

ClickHouse runs a fairly standard startup PM loop, roughly 4 to 6 stages over a long window (candidates report an average near 75 days): a recruiter screen, a hiring manager round, and several cross-functional stakeholder interviews across engineering, design, and product. The one thing that defines the loop is technical depth: this is a real-time analytics database company, so PMs are pushed on SQL, columnar/OLAP fundamentals, and whether they can dogfood the product and hold their own with engineers, not just talk roadmaps.

The interview process

  1. Recruiter screen (about 30 min). Background, motivation, and a deep dive into a recent project. Recruiter checks that your technical/data background fits a database company and that you understand what ClickHouse actually is.
  2. Hiring manager interview. Run by the product lead for the area (Cloud, security, etc.). Goes deep on how you define and drive a roadmap, work with engineering, and use data to make calls. Expect to defend real product decisions from your past.
  3. Cross-functional stakeholder rounds (multiple). Several interviews with engineering, design, security, and other product partners. Candidates report the same ground gets covered by different interviewers, and the bar is technical credibility plus the ability to align teams on scope and timeline.
  4. Product sense / domain deep dive. Discussion of how you would shape a feature or improvement for ClickHouse Cloud, grounded in real-time analytics use cases, query experience, and developer/data-team needs. They want to see structured thinking about an ambiguous, technical product.
  5. Technical and analytics screen. Working knowledge of SQL databases and data analytics is a stated requirement. Expect questions on columnar storage, OLAP query patterns, and how you would measure product usage and define KPIs, not deep coding.
  6. What they're really testing. Three signals dominate: (1) technical credibility, can you earn the trust of strong engineers and reason about a database product; (2) data-driven product judgment, do you define KPIs and use usage data to decide; (3) ownership and 0-to-1 drive, the 'thinker as well as a doer' who will dogfood the product daily and align teams on scope. Be ready for a slow, multi-week process.
