Claylabs PM interview guide

Clay (legal name Clay Labs, the clay.com GTM data and sales-orchestration company that coined the "GTM Engineer" role) runs a long, hands-on loop that for product-adjacent roles spans roughly six to eight touchpoints over about two months: a fast recruiter screen, an early founder or CPO conversation, a build-something-in-Clay take-home or live platform challenge, a panel presentation, and cross-functional plus co-founder rounds. The one thing that defines the loop is that Clay makes you actually use its product to solve a real problem, so it tests product fluency and resourcefulness, not just talk. Note: no public PM-specific interview reports exist for Clay; the process below is reconstructed from Clay's closely related product roles (GTM Engineer, Growth Strategist, Product Support), which share the same structure.

The interview process

1. Recruiter screen (about 30 min). Background, role, and logistics. Candidates describe it as easy, fast, and casual; it is a fit and motivation check, not a deep technical screen.
2. Founder / CPO screen. You meet founders early at Clay. This round probes how you think about the product direction and whether you can operate with high ambiguity in a product still being shaped by its users.
3. Take-home or on-the-spot platform challenge. You build a working solution inside Clay itself: an async take-home for GTM Engineer and product roles, a live build for Growth Strategist. You learn the product mainly from Clay's own docs, and the prompt rewards creativity and resourcefulness over a single correct answer.
4. Panel presentation. You present your take-home or case to a cross-functional panel and defend your decisions, tradeoffs, and how you would scale the approach.
5. Cross-functional and co-founder rounds. Final alignment interviews with peers from other functions and a co-founder. Tests collaboration and whether your judgment matches how Clay operates day to day.
6. What they're really testing. Three signals: hands-on fluency with Clay's own product (can you build a real workflow in it), an experimentation mindset under high ambiguity, and autonomous decision-making and resourcefulness (figuring things out from docs without being handed the answer).
