The interview process

1. Recruiter screen (around 30 to 45 min). Phone or Zoom call covering motivation and fit. Candidates report being asked for their top 1 to 3 motivators and to name 3 to 5 people they have worked most closely with. The recruiter sets expectations and assigns which Operating Principle each later round will probe.
2. Peer PM interview (around 45 min). A one-on-one with another product manager, mostly behavioral and collaboration focused. Tests how you work cross-functionally and whether your stories map to Chewy's Operating Principles.
3. Hiring manager interview (around 45 min). Behavioral questions plus two small case studies run by the hiring manager. Cases can range from a Chewy or e-commerce scenario to a generic product prompt, and candidates note interviewers sometimes want one specific answer rather than open exploration.
4. Writing sample (take-home, short notice). A written exercise sent with little lead time, reflecting Chewy's writing-driven, Amazon-style culture. Evaluates structured thinking and clear written communication, which the PM role leans on heavily.
5. Virtual onsite panel (4 one-on-ones, around 45 min each). Back-to-back Zoom rounds with design, engineering, and two product team members. A mix of behavioral, product sense, execution (metrics and prioritization), and roadmap discussion, each round mapped to an Operating Principle. The first three interviews act as blockers to reaching this round.
6. What they're really testing. Three signals carry the most weight: fit with Chewy's Operating Principles told through concrete STAR stories (the dominant filter); genuine customer obsession, with stories of going above and beyond for the customer; and clear structured communication under ambiguity, shown in both the writing sample and how you frame a case. Product frameworks matter but rank below culture fit and customer focus.
