Airbyte PM interview guide

Airbyte runs a 5-stage PM loop over roughly 3 to 4 weeks (about 23 days on average): a recruiter screen, a hiring manager call, a take-home or written assignment, a meeting with the Product Lead, and a virtual onsite that mixes technical, culture, and cross-functional rounds. The one thing that defines the loop is the take-home written assignment: Airbyte wants to see how you reason about its data-movement product on paper before you ever meet the Product Lead.

The interview process

1. Recruiter screen (about 30 min). A phone call on your background, past projects, and people-management experience, checking fit for a fast-moving open-source startup. Reported questions center on the projects you have shipped and how you have managed teams.
2. Hiring manager call. Situational and operational questions: how you handle priorities, SLAs, and cross-functional work. Airbyte is gauging team fit and whether you can run product in a lean, technical environment.
3. Take-home or written assignment. A written deliverable you build on your own, sometimes a deep-dive Q&A document touching API integrations, database topics, and product reasoning. Candidates report it can take several hours, and passing it is what unlocks the meeting with the Product Lead.
4. Product Lead interview. A conversation with the product leader to walk through your written work and your product thinking. This is the gate between the assignment and the full onsite loop.
5. Virtual onsite loop (multi-round). Roughly four to five back-to-back rounds: a culture interview with Product, another hiring manager round, and an applied technical or experience round. Expect to reason over real artifacts (API docs, logs, the connector model) rather than abstract whiteboarding, plus a possible cross-functional round with sales or product peers.
6. What they're really testing. Three signals dominate: technical depth in a data-movement and connectors domain (you can talk APIs, syncs, and integrations credibly), the quality of your written product reasoning from the take-home, and cross-functional fit for a fast-moving open-source startup.
