10x Genomics PM interview guide

10x Genomics runs a roughly 3 to 5 week PM loop of about 4 stages: recruiter screen, hiring manager call, a short open-ended challenge or take-home plus a presentation, then cross-functional interviews with engineering, science, and marketing. The one thing that defines the loop is the presentation: you must show you can grasp single-cell and spatial biology workflows and translate them into product strategy for non-PM scientific stakeholders.

The interview process

1. Recruiter screen (about 30 min). Phone call on your background, motivation, and fit for a biotech PM role. Light filter; they confirm you can speak credibly about life sciences before advancing you.
2. Hiring manager conversation. Deeper call with the hiring manager or a PM peer on your product experience and how you handle ambiguity and complexity. They probe whether you can reason about trade-offs in a long-lifecycle scientific-product context.
3. 20-minute challenge / take-home. A short, purposely open-ended timed challenge rather than a giant case study (10x states there are no perfect answers). It tests critical thinking and how you structure a problem under time pressure.
4. Presentation (often about 30 min). The cornerstone round: present a past product you managed or propose what 10x should build next, to a mixed expert audience. They watch how you synthesize complex information and defend a vision under questioning from scientists and engineers.
5. Cross-functional interviews. A series of 1:1s with stakeholders across engineering, science (R&D), and marketing. Each lens checks a different fit: scientific fluency, execution rigor, and your ability to build consensus among people with very different priorities.
6. What they're really testing. Three signals weigh most: (1) scientific and technical fluency, can you understand single-cell, spatial, and NGS workflows well enough to make real product trade-offs; (2) strategic product judgment under ambiguity and long biotech timelines; (3) cross-functional leadership, getting R&D, sales, and marketing aligned.
