Zynga PM interview guide

Zynga runs a roughly 4-round PM loop over about two weeks to two months: a recruiter screen, a take-home or live case study to grow a game's revenue, two PM-led rounds (analytics/root-cause plus product and game design), and a Director of Product behavioral round. The whole loop is built around one thing: can you reason about a real Zynga game's mechanics, metrics, and monetization, not generic PM frameworks.

The interview process

1. Recruiter screen (30 min). A recruiter covers your background, your interest in gaming, and your familiarity with Zynga's portfolio. Expect to be asked which mobile game you play, what you would change about it, and why, so they can gauge genuine product instinct for games.
2. Case study (take-home or live). You analyze one Zynga game or feature and propose a strategy to lift a specific metric, commonly a prompt to increase a game's revenue by about 5%. They evaluate structured thinking, data-driven reasoning, and whether your idea ties to a real acquisition, retention, or monetization lever.
3. Interview with a Senior PM (45 min). An analytical and root-cause round: a scenario like a falling revenue or DAU number where you form hypotheses and get pushed with cross-questions, plus questions on your gaming PM experience from your resume. They test how you isolate causes and handle follow-up pressure.
4. Interview with a Lead PM. A product and game design round where you design a feature or product for a Zynga game, for example a subscription program or a new game mode for a given audience. They look for creativity grounded in game mechanics and a clear link to engagement or monetization.
5. Interview with the Director of Product. A behavioral and culture-fit conversation: strengths, weaknesses, long-term goals, why PM, and why Zynga. They assess maturity, motivation, and alignment with how Zynga builds games.
6. What they're really testing. Three signals carry the most weight: real product sense for live games (breaking down mechanics and monetization), analytical rigor with game metrics like DAU, retention, ARPU, and LTV, and genuine passion for Zynga's products. A feature can be big or small as long as it clearly moves an acquisition, retention, or monetization metric.
